games and zines, rpgs and blogs, this and that, kind of flat
First post of 2025 isn't game stuff either. (behold, the universe.)
People are making plans ...
A new year means seeing a lot of projects and potential projects and the like all start spinning up, on blogs and mentioned on the fediverse and in discord servers and the like. It's nice when they start popping up like dandelions.
(someday I'll write something with dandelions)
Even if I don't feel up to an event or a project, I like seeing other people do them and be happy.
But seeing the discussion spin up also reminds me of a lot of the shite I uproot and bury from my sight on the regular, like the bizarre pearl-clutching tantrums from certain arenas about Dungeon23 two years ago. No I'm never forgetting that; it was bizarre and anger-provoking -- you can find at least one post on the subject on here somewhere, ported from the WP blog -- and just yeah. Yeah.
Oh no if you write a dungeon room a day for a year you're killing art just being capitalistic (man what, still man what) blah blah fuck off.
For a hot second I considered some form of hex(crawl)25 but I think (thought? it's been almost a week) it would be too much. At some point I would like to make a smaller hex map thing, though, and am cheering on anyone tackling it or anything similar --
Antisocial media ...
That that's the last ridiculous dustup I personally witnessed in the scene I can only attribute to my at times ruthless pruning, combined with having moved to the fediverse when a shit-sodden muskrat took over Twitter -- and, lo and behold, a lot (a lot) of the loudest, most miserable, most shit-stirring and clout-chasing and self-promoting etc etc of the scene either never tried a fedi instance or disappeared as soon as Threads and Bluesky opened up.
I'm given to understand that Bsky is very popular with the scene, especially. That's nice, I suppose. They can recreate Twitter and backbite and yell over there, which I suspect is happening as I type this because I do hear whispers of whispers.
I don't want to deal with it any more.
It's not like my first long and lengthy and near-total retreat; I'm just happy where I am, talking to a handful of folks. People know where to find me.
Making ...
If I can get myself together, I want to make more little zines. I like minizines; this year (I tell myself again) I will finally bury feeling guilty for the form factor. (besides, minizines are totally legit in the non-rpg zine scenes.)
And maybe quarter-size, or whatever else, because why not.
With more doodles when I can manage it.
(and some zines that aren't rpg-related.)
Of course, ZineQuest/ZiMo is coming up next month and we'll see how many people make shiny pro-printed zines again. I can't decide if I still feel bad for how fewer have caught my eye the last year or two, or if I'm just content in my patch. (if Mothership and the -Borgs are still really rolling, ehn.)
I'm not likely to ever do either, not with my simpler stuff. And that's okie. I just want to make little zines that folks can print out.
(one link, though: The Zungeon Manifesto was a spark of light on a dreary as fuck weekend. I may try the jam, even.)
And blog posts. (there's a "shorthanded clever bastard's guide to your own Dark Sun" that needs being done some time, at the least ...) There's big overlap there, of course, but that's fine. Part of the plan, arguably, even.
Someday I might even get the planar stuff and the space stuff that's on here finished and done something with. Maybe annoy everyone and convert both of them (the former from pocketrpg, the latter from TBH 1e) to Lindwyrm just because I can.
If I ever had enough Lindwyrmy stuff I would be so tempted to make a pocketbook-size version just for fun.maybe someday.
or maybe I'll just combine everything Lindwyrmy so far + a bunch of related blog posts + posts I like just because and it'll be some kind of shipwreck dinner of a little book, or something. ha.
Honestly there was going to be at least more useful navel-gazing, or commentary on Where I Feel I Fit In (Or Don't), or something; but I don't have the energy and, in the end, does it matter?
